Every moment of every day, and sometimes even in my
dreams, I feel compelled to create -- to create something beautiful that
will last longer than I will. To create pieces that are interesting as
well as beautiful.
My “paintbox’ is fabric and my creations are art quilts.
I manipulate cloth to make pictures; Pictures that can warm the body and,
if I am successful, move the heart.
My idea of a
perfect day finds me in the middle of my latest project with lots of work,
and lots of uninterrupted time. Marking, pinning, snipping, and sewing
irregular shaped cloth pieces into submission; pulling a threaded needle
in and out of the fabric and feeling the separate pieces becoming a whole
in my hands.
I like the sound of sharp scissors cutting
cloth. I like he steady rhythm of a well-engineered sewing machine; it is
soothing to my ear and my soul. This is how I make order in my world. This
is how I make sense out of chaos. This is what I have to offer. I can make
something functional and attractive. My work pleases me, and it is an
added bonus when it pleases others too.
If, at the end of the day, I
can stand back and look at what I've accomplished and say, “this will
endure, this stimulates my eye and my mind,” then that is a good day, and
I am anxious for tomorrow so I can continue creating.
